Summit Hike from Upper Terminal

Summit Hike from Upper Terminal

The summit hike from the upper terminal of the Jasper SkyTram is a short but rewarding alpine ascent that takes you from the tram's arrival point to the true summit of Whistlers Mountain. While the gondola delivers you high above the valley, the final stretch on foot adds a sense of accomplishment and a deeper connection to the mountain itself.
The trail begins just beyond the upper terminal, clearly defined and immediately exposed to the alpine environment. Unlike forest hikes lower down, this route exists entirely above the treeline, where the terrain is open, rocky, and shaped by wind and weather. The path is well-marked, often consisting of gravel, compacted earth, and stone, guiding hikers safely across the fragile alpine tundra.
The hike is relatively short in distance - typically around 1.2 to 1.5 kilometres one way - but it gains noticeable elevation over that span. Expect a steady climb rather than a flat walk, with sections that include gradual switchbacks and slightly steeper inclines. Most visitors complete the ascent in about 20 to 40 minutes, depending on pace and how often they stop to take in the views.
As you climb, the perspective changes continuously. Looking back, the upper terminal becomes smaller against the slope, and the view opens further across Jasper National Park. The Athabasca Valley stretches wider below, and surrounding mountain ranges begin to align into broader, more dramatic formations. Each step upward subtly expands the horizon.
The environment along the trail is distinctly alpine. Vegetation is minimal and low to the ground - mosses, lichens, and small flowering plants cling to the rocky soil. The exposure to wind and sun is constant, and weather conditions can shift quickly, even in summer. This adds a raw, elemental feel to the hike, where the mountain's character is fully present.
Approaching the summit, the trail narrows slightly along the ridge, and the sense of elevation becomes more pronounced. The final steps bring you to a high point where the view is completely unobstructed in all directions. From here, the surrounding peaks, valleys, and distant ranges form a continuous 360-degree panorama.
The return hike follows the same route, offering a different visual experience as you descend - views shift from outward-facing panoramas to a more direct focus on the upper terminal and the slope ahead. The descent is quicker but still requires careful footing on the rocky terrain.
The summit hike is an accessible extension of the SkyTram experience. It transforms the visit from a passive observation into an active exploration, allowing you to stand at the highest reachable point and fully engage with the scale and atmosphere of the Rockies from above. Book the Jasper SkyTram
