History of the Jasper SkyTram being Completed in 1964

The Jasper SkyTram was completed in 1964, marking a major milestone in both tourism and engineering for the Canadian Rockies. At the time, it was a bold and ambitious project—bringing European-style aerial tramway technology to the rugged wilderness of Jasper National Park. Designed and constructed with the help of Swiss and Austrian tramway experts, the system was built to withstand extreme mountain weather while offering a safe and scenic passage up Whistlers Mountain.

The construction involved anchoring massive concrete foundations into the rocky terrain and erecting a single steel support tower that could guide the dual tramcars along a cable route stretching nearly one kilometer in elevation. The project took months of precision planning and difficult high-altitude labor, with all materials transported up the mountain under challenging conditions. When it opened to the public in the summer of 1964, it was the longest and highest guided aerial tramway in Canada—a title it still holds today.

The SkyTram quickly became a landmark attraction in Jasper, offering a unique way for visitors to access alpine views and experience high-altitude landscapes without the need for strenuous hiking. Over the decades, the SkyTram has undergone several upgrades to improve its mechanical systems, passenger safety, and station facilities, all while preserving the historic character and engineering spirit of its original 1960s design. The Jasper SkyTram's successful completion in 1964 laid the foundation for what has become one of Jasper National Park’s most iconic and enduring experiences. Book the Jasper SkyTram
