The Jasper SkyTram is a marvel of alpine engineering that soars from the valley floor to the summit of Whistlers Mountain.

Jasper SkyTram Tower Structure

The tram operates on a bi-cable aerial tramway system, featuring two cables: a heavy-duty 46 mm track cable that supports the weight of the cab, and a 27 mm hauling cable that pulls it along. Launched in 1964 and modernized over time, its design minimizes environmental impact by using a single support tower, strategically placed about halfway up the 1 km vertical span between stations.

Each tramcar seats up to 26 passengers plus an operator, and features panoramic windows for unobstructed views. The system shuttles the cars efficiently: as one ascends, the other descends on the same cables. The ascent covers nearly 1,005 metres of vertical gain-from the lower terminal at ~1,258 m to the upper station at 2,263 m-in just 7 to 7.5 minutes, traveling at speeds up to 6 m/s (about 20 ft/s).

Inside each cabin, a flight attendant provides live narration during the ride-pointing out landmarks, wildlife, and geological features, enriching the journey.

At the top, you're deposited at a lively upper station offering expansive boardwalks, access to alpine trails (including the route to the 2,463 m true summit), a Summit Café, gift shop, and seasonal amenities like guided snowshoeing and stargazing events.

The SkyTram remains Canada’s highest and longest guided aerial tramway, blending historic design with modern upgrades, providing passengers a swift, scenic ascent through diverse mountain ecosystems while minimizing its footprint on the landscape.

The Jasper SkyTram features a single, prominent support tower positioned partway along its steep alpine route, rising from the lower terminal to the upper station on Whistlers Mountain. This tower plays a crucial role in stabilizing the bi-cable system that guides and supports the tram cabins. The structure is engineered to withstand strong mountain winds and variable weather conditions, with heavy-duty cables anchored into reinforced concrete bases. As each tram ascends or descends, it passes by this tower, which briefly causes a noticeable sway as the cabin transitions over the cable wheels mounted at the tower's top. The design allows for a relatively smooth ride despite the steep incline, and the passing moment offers an exciting sensation for passengers, with sweeping mountain views expanding in every direction. The tower is not publicly accessible but remains an iconic mid-route marker of the SkyTram journey, highlighting the feat of engineering that makes this high-mountain ascent possible.
